Art Shows Galore!

I just got an email yesterday that the Rogue Taxidermy Show in Hollywood will be extended to show until Monday. But if you don't have time to go to this one, you still have the opportunity to go to the Palate Exhibit in Culver City. Both are superb so check them out! You can see the photos I took in the gallery but here is a sneak peek at some of the things you can see there.

LOST Finale Party!

I went to the Lost Finale party this Sunday at Coffee Table Bistro. How convenient was it for me that it was right in my own neighborhood?!?! I've been watching LOST for five years (1 year after it premiered) and have seen every episode. In 2005, I got to meet Naveen Andrews (Sayid) at the Honolulu Airport. You can see the picture and my article on the event on PlanetEye

Anyway the event was less packed than I had expected. The sports room had more people in it than the main lounge which had the big screen tv. Everyone in the sports room loved the finale while people in the lounge were less happy. I guess atmosphere and where you watch it really does matter. Aedyn was running around so maybe that distracted everyone. As someone who has watched from the beginning (well sort of), I feel that they tried to wrap up things too quickly toward the end. There needed to be more gradual revelations than just solving everything in the last season (like all of a sudden Juliet and Sawyer get together so Jack and Kate can be paired together). I don't know that's just my opinion. My theory for the end of the show was that the alternate life became their real life but I WAS WRONG haha. Well check out the photos from Sunday in my gallery. Oh yea, the picture on top is the shirt I wore (homemade of course).

AFO: Banh Cuon

Posted on April 22, 2010 at 3:14 PM Comments comments (0)

I decided to write my first AFO post on a food that not many people outside of the Vietnamese community may have heard of, Banh Cuon. The outside is like a rice-flour crepe with the inside filling usually made of minced pork, mushrooms, and garlic. It is traditionally served for dipping in a fish sauce but I prefer to use plain old high-sodium soy sauce (ok for me because my doctor said I need more salt due to my low blood pressure).

It is nearly impossible to find, even in Los Angeles (believe me I've tried). You can usually only find them in a few restaurants in Little Saigon which is in Westminster of Orange County, CA. I found that Tay Ho carries this dish which they serve with a fried shrimp cake and meats. Hardly any Vietnamese restaurants serve it because I believe it is more popular in North Vietnam (correct me if I'm wrong), whose restaurants don't really exist here.

However, I found that the only place near me that serves it is a little truck in Chinatown called Nam Thai which is always parked on Spring and Alpine Ave. They consistently have Banh cuon and other traditional Vietnamese food. The Banh cuon runs out fast so I suggest getting there early.

Well I hope you like my first AFO post! I encourage you to look for this dish wherever you are on the globe. When you eat it, the texture makes it seem like you are eating a creature from another planet (goes with the AFO theme don't you think?). It will be also a great conversation starter with your friends who I'm sure has never tried the dish!

AFO Sightings Intro

So I decided to have a section of my blog devoted to AFO's. Before I explain what AFO means, what sparked this idea was that I watched the movie "The Fourth Kind" with Mila Jovavich last weekend. (If you haven't watched the film yet don't read on.) To make a long story short, it's basically about contact with aliens-a story I'm sure we're all tired of. However, the approach is different than what we're used to. It is similar to that of the Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity where the audience doesn't know if this was based on a true story. After much research and soul searching, I found out that it's NOT. A trickery I believe deserves a burning at the stake. So to remedy these feelings of deception, I bring you the AFOs=Asian Food Obsession series. It has been known to abduct the masses, especially in Los Angeles. Beware you may be next!!!

Be on the lookout for my first blog on these strange delicacies known as Asian Food. The Roswell of these objects include your local 99 Ranch Market. Oh NOOOOOOO!
